  69. 1)  What are the PAS, PAS+, and the PAS-16?
  70.  
  71. The PAS was the original PAS card.  It is capable of FM synthesizing,
  72. and digital sound.  It can do 8 bit digital sampling and 8 bit digital
  73. playback (I don't know at what rate).  The PAS has shielding built
  74. into it that eliminates background noise that can be created by many
  75. of the components of computer systems (hard drives for example).
  76.  
  77. The PAS+ is the new version of the old PAS.  I don't believe the PAS
  78. is for sale anymore, as the PAS+ has probably replaced it.  The PAS+
  79. is capable of FM synthesizing, and digital sound.  It has the
  80. shielding that the original PAS had.  It can do 8 bit digital
  81. sampling and 16 bit digital playback.

  83. The PAS-16 is currently the most advanced sound card in the Pro Audio
  84. Spectrum line.  It is capable of FM synthesizing, and digital sound.
  85. It can do 16 bit digital sampling and 16 bit digital playback.  It
  86. has the shielding that was present in the original PAS.

  89. 2)  What are the specs for the PAS-16?
  90.  
  91. Here are the specs for the PAS-16.  I understand that the specs for 
  92. the PAS+ are identical, except that the PAS+ can only do 8 bit 
  93. sampling, and requires you to specify when you want SB compatibility 
  94. mode on or off.
  95. (Sorry, I don't have specs for the original PAS.)

  215. 3)  Are the PAS cards Soundblaster and Adlib compatible?
  216.  
  217. The original PAS is software compatible with the SB.  You have to run
  218. a different driver to get the compatibility.  I have heard that the
  219. compatibility is not very strong, since it is being done through
  220. software emulation.
  221.  
  222. Both the PAS+, and the PAS-16 are hardware compatible with the SB.
  223. This means that there is basically a SB built into the board.  It is
  224. like having two soundcards in one.  You run the one PAS driver and
  225. voila, you have SB capability.  By default, the SB section is set
  226. to IRQ 5, DMA 1, and I/O port 220h, while the PAS section is set to
  227. IRQ 7 and DMA 3.  In addition, it is possible to use both the SB
  228. section and the PAS section at the same time.  You could have game
  229. music going in the SB section, and then play a .wav file with the
  230. PAS at the same time.  I have not run into any SB compatibility
  231. problems with my PAS-16.

  233. Adlib compatibility is included with the PAS+ and PAS-16.  If you
  234. are running an older program that requires SOUND.COM to play Adlib
  235. sounds, you can use the included FM.COM instead.
  236.  
  237. All SB games use DMA1, an IRQ and an I/O port.  Some SB games (like 
  238. WOLFENSTEIN 3-D) look for the following statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT:  
  239. "SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3", where A220 is for I/O port 220h, or 
  240. which ever I/O port is selected at J10. I5 is IRQ 5, or which ever 
  241. IRQ is selected at J12. D1 is for DMA 1 which is required for SB 
  242. compatibility. Try with T2 or T3 for timer. Other SB games do not 
  243. look for this statement to find the settings but allow you to set 
  244. the settings via an install program or by modifying a configuration file.
  245.  
  246. A few games default to certain settings and do not allow the user to 
  247. change these settings to match the board settings.  Make sure that the 
  248. game's settings match with the settings used by the SB section of the 
  249. sound card.  The default settings for the SB section are given above.  
  250. Refer to the game's user guide or contact the game manufacturer for 
  251. assistance.

  253. Some games do not work properly if the computer is running in TURBO 
  254. mode.  On most computers, there is a TURBO button on the front.  If 
  255. this button is not found, disabling the internal/external memory cache 
  256. in the computer's CMOS setup achieves the same result.

  296. 4)  How does the PAS-16 compare to the Soundblaster Pro?
  297.  
  298. NOTE:  Reports from the Usenet indicate that the Soundblaster Pro 
  299. doesn't filter sound when it is sampling in stereo.  It only filters 
  300. in mono.  Also, the card is not shielded very well from the radiation 
  301. given off by your computer's components.  If the hard disk is accessed 
  302. when sampling, you can hear an audible pop in the sample.  These 
  303. problems do not appear with the PAS-16, which has shielding.

  322. and the PAS-16.

  324. NOTE:  The Ultrasound has not been released yet.  Any spec or
  325.        feature for it could be changed when it finally does
  326.        come out.

  328. NOTE:  The Ultrasound is capable of 16 bit sampling and SCSI if you
  329.        buy the appropriate daughterboards.  The daughterboards should
  330.        be available in the 3rd quarter of 1992.  These boards will
  331.        have to be purchased separately and then plugged into the main
  332.        Ultrasound board for it to gain 16 bit sampling and SCSI
  333.        capability.

  354. 6)  Will I have problems using a PAS card with a fast computer (486)?

  356. I have used a PAS-16 for three months with no problems on a 486-33 ISA
  357. machine.

  360. 7)  Will OS/2 drivers be available for the PAS cards?
  361.  
  362. Word from the Usenet is that OS/2 drivers are being written right now.
  363. They should be out in October.
  364.  
  365. Even if you don't have OS/2 drivers, the PAS cards will work fine in a
  366. virtual DOS session, or in Win-OS/2.  You can also use the Windows
  367. Multimedia extensions with Win-OS/2 and the PAS cards.  When Windows
  368. 3.1 support is available in OS/2 (probably in September), then you
  369. can use the Windows 3.1 drivers in OS/2.

  374. The PAS-16 comes with a variety of software.  Make sure that you get
  375. version 1.2 or above.  If you have an earlier version, contact
  376. Media Vision for an upgrade.  The PAS+ comes with the same software.

  432. 9)  Is setting up a PAS+ or PAS-16 hard?
  433.  
  434. Not at all.  You put the DOS install disk in your floppy drive, set
  435. the current drive the floppy, and type INSTALL.  You can then set
  436. the IRQ's and DMA channels from the software--no flipping dip switches
  437. or resetting jumpers.  To install the Windows software, just put the
  438. Windows install disk in the floppy, and run INSTALL from Windows.
  439. The appropriate line to start the PAS driver is inserted in your
  440. config.sys (only after receiving confirmation from you).  You're done.

  443. 10) I have installed my PAS+ or PAS-16, but the sound from games is
  444.     very low and hard to hear.  What's wrong?
  445.  
  446. I had the same problem.  You need to set the mixer on your card so
  447. that the volume is a little higher.  You can also set the bass,
  448. treble, loudness, stereo separation, and a few other things.  To turn
  449. the volume up, you use the PAS.EXE program in your PROAUDIO
  450. directory.  Refer to the manual on how to use PAS.EXE.  When you
  451. get everything set up right, put it in a batch file to be run from
  452. your autoexec.bat.  That way, the mixer is set up when you turn on
  453. your computer.

  458. Media Vision is making a developer's kit that is free of charge.  It 
  459. is out now and will work with the PAS/PAS+/PAS 16 cards.  Call

  498. To get an idea of how good the quality of various sampling rates is, 
  499. here is a chart comparing sampling rates to everyday sounds:

  511. 14) How much memory does the PAS-16's MVSOUND driver take up?

  513. The MVSOUND driver is what the PAS-16 uses to talk to your computer's
  514. hardware.  You load this driver from your config.sys, and it gives you 
  515. PAS-16 compatibility, SB compatibility, and Adlib compatibility.  The 
  516. driver takes up about 9.2 kb of RAM.  It can be loaded high.

  625. boards, ...  5.  Try the PAS-16 in another 16-bit slot.  6.  Try the 
  626. PAS-16 in another computer.  7.  If you do not hear any sound, recheck 
  627. the speaker/headphone connections.

  639. --How do I change the DMA and IRQ settings for the PAS-16 section of 
  640. the sound card?  
  641. The PAS-16's DMA and IRQ can be changed by changing the D:x and Q:x 
  642. parameter on the MVSOUND.SYS statement in the CONFIG.SYS file.

  644. --How do I change the IRQ and I/O port settings for the SB section of 
  645. the sound card?
  646. The SB's IRQ and I/O port can be changed by changing the jumpers at J12 
  647. and J10 on the sound card.

  650. No.  The settings must be different to prevent a DMA and IRQ conflict.

  653. DMA conflict causes digital audio to be distorted or no digital audio.  
  654. It can also cause system to hang, reboot, or issue parity error.  IRQ 
  655. conflict causes digital audio to loop and no synthesized audio.

  657. --What are the symptoms of  an IRQ and I/O port conflict on the SB 
  658. section?
  659. The game does not produce digital audio or digital audio is distorted, 
  660. or, running the game causes the computer to lock up.

  662. --What causes a Memory Parity Error?

  665. --Which jumpers on the sound card can I change?
  666. The only ones that can be changed are the SB jumpers:  J10 for I/O port, 
  667. J11 for DMA 1, and J12 for I/O port.

  669. --How do I disable SB compatibility mode?
  670. Float all of the shunts for J10, J11 and J12 (by putting the shunt on 1 
  671. pin only).  This will disable the SB's IRQ, I/O port and DMA 1.

  673. --Does the PAS-16 work in a 486/50, or, What computers does the PAS-16 
  674. work in?
  675. The PAS-16 was designed around the IBM AT specification.  It will work 
  676. in a 486/50 if the bus (I/O CLK) speed is lowered down to 8MHz.  Please 
  677. note that this is not the same as the CPU speed.  Once it works fine at 
  678. 8MHz bus speed, you can experiment at higher speeds.

  737. again.  Refer to page 1-25 of the PAS-16 User's Guide v1.1 for an

  740. --What parameters does MVSOUND.SYS support?
  741. D:x, x is (0,1,2,3,5,6,7) for DMA for the PAS-16 section of the card.
  742. Q:x, x is (2-7,10-15) for IRQ for the PAS-16 section of the card.
  743. J:x, x is 0 or 1, 1 is for Joystick Enabled (default), 0 is for         
  744. Joystick Disabled.
  745. V:x, x is from 1 to 100, which is the initial volume setting.  
  746. T:x, x is 0 or 1, 1 is to use the on-board oscillator, 0 is to use the
  747. motherboard's oscillator.   Some computers such as 486/33 OPTI have   
  748. improperly-designed oscillator which causes the OPL3 FM chip on the   
  749. PAS-16 to produce random noises.  See Page 1-25 of the PAS-16 User's   
  750. Guide v1.1 for an explanation.

  759. This is a CD-ROM driver written by Trantor Systems.  It comes with 
  760. the SCSI/Cable Driver Kit.  The current version is 1.46B. The 
  761. parameters that are supported are:
  762. D:x, x is any device name that you assign to the CD-ROM device.
  763. R is for reset.
  764.  
  765. --What is MSCDEX.EXE?
  766. This is the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions.  The current version is 2.21.  
  767. The parameters that are supported are:
  768. D:x, x is the same device name that is assigned to the CD-ROM device    
  769. by TSLCDR.SYS.
  770. M:x, x is the number of 2K memory buffers, 10 is usually used.
  771. L:x, x is the drive letter you want to assign to the CD-ROM drive.
  772. V is for a verbose listing of information about memory usage.
  773. E is for expanded memory usage.
  774.  
  775. --I don't need the SCSI or audio cable.  Can I just get a copy of 
  776. TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE?
  777. These drivers are royalty-bearing software which means they cannot be 
  778. provided free of charge.  Also, they come with the SCSI/Cable Driver 
  779. Kit only.
  780.  
  781. --Which CD-ROM drives can I use with the PAS-16?
  782. See the SUPPORTED CD-ROM DRIVES section above.  The PAS-16 has a SCSI 
  783. interface which allows it to control SCSI devices. Contact Media 
  784. Vision Sales for the SCSI CD-ROM Cable/Driver Kit (Specify 
  785. internal or external).

  787. --Do I have to use the PAS-16's SCSI interface to control my CD-ROM 
  788. drive which has its own controller?
  789. No.  All that you have to do is to make sure that the CD-Audio signals 
  790. are routed from the CD-ROM drive to the PAS-16.

  792. --I already have a SCSI adapter in my system.  Will I have to remove 
  793. it if I install the PAS-16?  Can multiple SCSI adapters co-reside in 
  794. my PC?
  795. You can have as many SCSI adapters in the same system as there are 
  796. available slots.  The PAS-16's SCSI will not interfere with other 
  797. SCSI adapters.  The only possible conflicts would be conflicts with 
  798. DMAs, IRQs and I/O port used by the sound card.
  799.  
  800. --I have the Sony CDU-535 CD-ROM drive (or Laser Library). Can I use 
  801. the PAS-16 to control the Sony drive?
  802. No.  This Sony drive uses a proprietary Sony Bus interface. Media 
  803. Vision will release the PAS-16 and PAS+ Sony Bus version in the near 
  804. future to work with this drive.  Contact Customer Service after 
  805. August 1 to be added to a waiting list.
  806.  
  807. --Can I use the PAS-16 to control other SCSI devices?
  808. Yes.  Trantor Systems can be reached at 510-770-1400 for a $59.00 
  809. driver set which supports all SCSI hard drives, removable hard drives 
  810. and magneto-optical drives.  Currently there is no driver support for 
  811. tape drives or scanners.
  812.  
  813. --I used to have the original PAS board and a SCSI/Cable Driver Kit 
  814. and have just updated to the PAS-16.  Do I need an updated version 
  815. of the CD-ROM drivers?
  816. Contact Customer Service for a free driver update for both TSLCDR.SYS 
  817. and MSCDEX.EXE.

  819. --I have the ATI Graphics Ultra (or Vantage) and when the TSLCDR.SYS 
  820. driver loads it detects two SCSI addresses.  I also experience 
  821. problems with digital audio and get a red screen on WIN31.  Make sure 
  822. you have TSLCDR.SYS v1.46B or later.
  823.  
  824. --Which SCSI Interface is used on the PAS-16?  How do I write device 
  825. drivers for it?
  826. The PAS-16 uses the Zilog's Z5380.  Contact Media Vision Customer 
  827. Service for documentation on the chip's specification and the PAS-16 
  828. Software Developer's Toolkit.  This software toolkit is currently 
  829. under development.
  830.  
  831. --What is the transfer rate of the PAS-16's SCSI interface?
  832. It has a maximum transfer rate of 690KB/sec.
  833.  
  834. --I get the error "No SCSI host adapter found".
  835. The SCSI CD-ROM driver is board dependent.  If you would like 
  836. to use the PAS-16 to control the CD-ROM drive, you need to use our 
  837. TSLCDR.SYS driver v1.46B or later.
  838.  
  839. --I get the error "No devices respond on this SCSI host adapter".
  840. First, make sure one of the computer's power cables has been connected 
  841. to the back of the CD-ROM drive.  Second, check the internal flat 
  842. ribbon SCSI cable to make sure it is properly connected to the back 
  843. of the CD-ROM drive.  
  844.  
  845. --I get the error "Device driver not found:  MVCD001.  No valid CD-ROM 
  846. selected".
  847. First, if you are using DR DOS 6.0, it is necessary to change the 
  848. device name for both TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE statements from 
  849. "MVCD001" to "TSLCD".  Second, make sure that the device name in both 
  850. of these statements match.
  851.  
  852. --I get the error "Incorrect DOS version".
  853. If you are using MS DOS 5.0, MSCDEX.EXE v2.2 requires that CONFIG.SYS 
  854. has the statement "DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE".  You should not get 
  855. this error f you have MSCDEX.EXE v2.21.  This driver can be downloaded 
  856. from the Media Vision BBS.
  857.  
  858. --I get the error "Invalid drive specification" when I type the drive 
  859. letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive.
  860. Make sure that you have "LASTDRIVE=X" in the CONFIG.SYS file, 
  861. where X is the next logical drive letter after the letter assigned to 
  862. the CD-ROM drive in the MSCDEX.EXE statement. 
  863.  
  864. --I get the error "CDR 101:  Drive not ready".
  865. First, make sure that you are not trying to read a CD-Audio disk.  
  866. Second, check in the internal, flat ribbon SCSI cable to make sure 
  867. it is properly connected.  Third, move the TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE 
  868. statements to the end of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  869.  
  870. --I get the error "CDR 103:  CD-ROM not High Sierra or ISO-9660 
  871. format reading drive X.  Abort, Retry or Ignore?"
  872. First, check to make sure that you are not trying to read a CD-Audio 
  873. disk.  Second, this is usually caused by a software conflict.  Reduce 
  874. to the generic CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT and try again.
  875.  
  876. --I do not hear any CD-Audio at all, or, How do I connect the internal 
  877. CD-Audio cable?
  878. The internal CD-Audio cable may not have been properly connected or 
  879. it is defective.  Use a custom audio cable to connect the PAS-16's 
  880. internal audio input at J5 to the CD-ROM drive.  
  881.  
  882. --Does the PAS-16 support CD-ROM XA?
  883. No.  This feature may be supported in the future.

  885. 22) I have some questions about Stereo Studio FX.

  888. --Does SFX support 16-bit PCM recording and playback?
  889. SFX only supports 8 bits.

  893. First, make sure that the file is not a 16-bit recorded file. SFX only 
  894. supports 8-bit recorded files.  Second, try using a high-order DMA, such 
  895. as DMA 5.

  897. --Activating "Record" in SFX disconnects the channels.
  898. This problem has been reported to Media Vision.

  901. 23) I have some questions about SP Spectrum.

  904. --TAPIMV issues the error "FM sound card not found."

  909. --I have the Media Vision MIDI Mate v1.0 (MIDI connector box) which 
  910. worked fine on the PAS.  After I upgraded to the PAS-16, MIDI IN does 
  911. not work using the same MIDI Mate.
  912. Inside MIDI Mate, there is a chip at U1 (next to the MIDI cable) called 
  913. an opto-isolator.  The old part number is 6N136. For the MIDI Mate to 
  914. work with the PAS-16, it needs the new part number which is 6N138.

  917. --The FMEDIT section in the PAS 16 User's Guide has missing pages to 
  918. describe the Mixer, Display Setup, Trigger Note, Quitting, and Pop-up

  926. Guide for additional information.

  928. --I get the error "Run time error, Divide by 0" when I run SP Spectrum.
  929. This is caused by an incorrect setup of the memory manager, commonly 
  930. seen in QEMM and Wytek co-processor in 486 machines. Contact 
  931. Quarterdeck or the manufacturer of the memory manager for assistance 
  932. with reconfiguration.

  935. 24) I have some questions about TrakBlaster Pro.

  940. This is caused by a DMA conflict.  Make sure the PAS-16 section is not 
  941. set for DMA 1 unless the SB compatibility has been disabled.

  943. --Does TBPRO support high-order DMA and IRQ?
  944. No.  TBPRO only supports DMA 1,3 and IRQ 2,3,5,7.
  945.

  947. 25) I have some questions about Monologue.
  948.     (Monologue troubleshooting)
  949.  
  950. --Running Monologue causes my computer to lock up.
  951. Monologue uses the SB section of the sound card.  Monologue defaults 
  952. to IRQ 7 where as the SB section of the sound card (at J12) defaults 
  953. to IRQ 5.  To change Monologue's IRQ setting to match the card's 
  954. setting, run Monologue's INSTALL.  
  955.  
  956. --All possible SB's IRQs at J12 have been tried and Monologue still 
  957. locks up or does not produce any audio.
  958. Select the "AdLib" driver instead of "Media Vision Products" and try 
  959. again.  Also, you need to run you bus at its standard speed (8 mHz).  
  960. If you run it faster, Monologue will lock up.  Try resetting the bus 
  961. speed back to 8 mHz using your BIOS setup.
  962.  
  963. --Dr. DOS 6.0's memory manager causes Monologue to lock up the computer 
  964. when using ALT-T to activate Monologue.
  965. First, run MEMMAX -U to disable upper memory.  Second, run Monologue.  
  966. Third, run MEMMAX +U to re-enable upper memory.
  967.  
  968. --The TALKDRVR.SYS is missing from the Monologue v3.0 For DOS disk.
  969. This driver was provided with Monologue v2.0 and has been removed from 
  970. the disk for v3.0 by the software manufacturer (First Byte).

  972. --The Monologue User's Guide indicates that there should be two 5 1/4" 
  973. disks.
  974. There is only one 5 1/4" disk.

  976. --The "Alt-T" key combination does not work.
  977. Some programs like WordPerfect or WordStar also use the same key 
  978. combination which will create a conflict with Monologue.  To resolve 
  979. this problem, you need to assign a new hot key combination.  Go into 
  980. the Monologue directory and run CONFIG.BAT.

  982. --Monologue's "Alt-T" key combination does not work properly.  
  983. Sometimes it does and sometimes strange things happen.
  984. First, delete the Monologue directory completely.  Re-install 
  985. Monologue and then try again.

  987. --When I run "SAYFILE filename.doc" at the DOS prompt nothing happens.
  988. SAYFILE.BAT is missing a parameter to allow a DOC filename to be 
  989. passed to the SAYF.EXE so that it can speak the file.  Modify 
  990. SAYFILE.BAT by changing the third line from "SAYF" to "SAYF %1" and 
  991. then try again.  Run "SAYFILE filename.doc".  Press Enter.

  1007. disk?
  1008. If you have the PAS Windows drivers installed or have an older version 
  1009. of PAS-16 drivers,  go into the Control Panel, Drivers, and remove 
  1010. every driver which references Pro Audio Spectrum or Media Vision.  
  1011. Restart WIN31 and then install the new drivers.  Or, if you have 
  1012. Norton Desktop For Windows which will interfere with our Windows 
  1013. Driver's INSTALL program.  To work around the problem, go into 
  1014. SYSTEM.INI, [boot] section.  Replace "SHELL=NDW.EXE" with 
  1015. "SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE".  Or, if you are using DR DOS 6.0's SHARE which 
  1016. causes our INSTALL program to crash the system.  To work around the 
  1017. problem, remove SHARE.  Re-boot the computer.  Then install the 
  1018. Windows drivers.
  1019.  
  1020. --Do I need MVSOUND.SYS for Windows?
  1021. Currently, yes.  In the future, the PAS-16's Windows drivers will 
  1022. not have to depend on MVSOUND.SYS.
  1023.  
  1024. --Can I use different IRQ and DMA settings under Windows, than under 
  1025. DOS?
  1026. The DMA set in SYSTEM.INI for Windows can be different from the DMA 
  1027. set in CONFIG.SYS for DOS as long as WIN31 is started in 386-Enhanced 
  1028. mode.  However , if you start WIN31 is started in standard mode, you 
  1029. make make the settings the same.
  1030.  
  1031. --What is the advantage of using a high-order DMA and IRQ?
  1032. High-order DMA allows 16-bit DMA transfer which enables the 
  1033. MVPROAUD.DRV sound driver to handle digital audio more efficiently and 
  1034. also to provide more available DMA selections. High-order IRQ only 
  1035. provides more available IRQ selections.
  1036.  
  1037. --I have just received the latest version of the PAS-16 Windows Drivers 
  1038. disk.  Do I have to remove the older version first?
  1039. Yes.    
  1040.  
  1041. --Sound plays normally under DOS using the selected DMA and IRQ 
  1042. settings, but loops under Windows using the same DMA and IRQ settings.
  1043. This is caused by an IRQ conflict.  Edit the SYSTEM.INI file to change 
  1044. the IRQ setting under [mvproaud.drv] section.
  1045.  
  1046. --Pro Mixer's wave meter points at the beginning of the red area 
  1047. instead of at zero.
  1048. A future release of WIN31 drivers will correct this problem.  It 
  1049. should be ready by August.
  1050.  
  1051. --What do I have to do before I can record using Pocket Recorder or 
  1052. Sound Recorder?
  1053. Go into Pro Mixer or Pocket Mixer to set the audio input source to 
  1054. recording mode.
  1055.  
  1056. --When I record at 16-bit mode, there is very bad clipping or it does 
  1057. not work at all.  8-bit recording works fine.
  1058. If you are using an low-order DMA then change to a 16-bit DMA under 
  1059. the [mvproaud.drv] section of SYSTEM.INI and try again.
  1060.  
  1061. --Recording at 8-bit is very scratchy.  16-bit recording does not 
  1062. have this problem.
  1063. The PAS-16 has a 16-bit PCM DAC.  Recording at 8-bit using a 16-bit 
  1064. DAC is definitely more noisy than recording at 8-bit on the PAS which 
  1065. only has an 8-bit DAC.  In the next release, Pocket recorder will 
  1066. record better at 8 bits.
  1067.  
  1068. --Does the Pocket Recorder support the Cut, Copy and Paste features?
  1069. These features will be supported in the next release.  Check with Media 
  1070. Vision in August to find out if WIN31 Drivers and Pocket Tools v1.4 is 
  1071. available.
  1072.  
  1073. --I get the errors "Can't find input device with pid." and "Can't find 
  1074. output device with pid." when trying to run Pocket Recorder.
  1075. Make sure the MVSOUND.SYS statement appears in CONFIG.SYS and that 
  1076. the driver loads properly when the computer boots up.  
  1077.  
  1078. --I get the error "PREC has caused a General Protection Fault error 
  1079. in USER.EXE..."
  1080. This error occurs most frequently in 286 computers and also in faster 
  1081. computers which have less than 2MB of virtual memory under Windows.  
  1082.  
  1083. --If Pocket Recorder is used to record a 16-bit wav file, and is saved 
  1084. then played from Media Player, the file will play properly to the end 
  1085. but the thumb button on the position slider will not have reached the 
  1086. end.
  1087. This problem has been reported to Media Vision and will be fixed in 
  1088. the future release of WIN31 Drivers v1.4. 
  1089.  
  1090. --While recording under Pocket Recorder, if I open/close/use other 
  1091. applications, there are clicking/popping sounds that also get recorded.
  1092. This problem has been reported to Media Vision and is currently being 
  1093. researched.
  1094.  
  1095. --Pocket Recorder's OLE (Object Linking & Embedding) does not work 
  1096. properly.
  1097. The OLE feature is not fully implemented.  Please document the problems 
  1098. in detail and fax or mail to Technical Support to be forwarded to Media 
  1099. Vision.
  1100.  
  1101. --A file recorded using RECFILE.EXE (PAS-16's DOS utility) plays back 
  1102. fine under Pocket Recorder but this same file will not play back under 
  1103. Media Player. 
  1104. A new version of RECFILE.EXE, dated 6-22-92 or later, does not have 
  1105. this problem.  On BBS, download P16REC.ZIP; on Compuserve, download 
  1106. TOOLS.ZIP.
  1107.  
  1108. --How do I play CD-Audio under WIN31?
  1109. First, put a CD-Audio disk into the CD-ROM drive.  Failure to do this 
  1110. will cause the [MCI] CD-Audio driver to not install properly  Second, 
  1111. go into the Control Panel, Drivers.  Click on the Add button.  Select 
  1112. "[MCI] CD-Audio" driver.  Click on the OK
  1113.  
  1114. --I do not get any FM sound when I run DOS games under the DOS shell 
  1115. of Windows.
  1116. The OPL3 FM synthesizer chip on the PAS-16 can operate in either OPL3 
  1117. (4-operator) mode or 3812 (2-operator) mode.  Under Windows, Voyetra's 
  1118. OPL3.DRV driver puts this FM chip into the OPL3 mode to produce rich FM 
  1119. sounds.  However, most existing games only use the 2-operator mode.  
  1120. This should change in the future.
  1121.  
  1122. --Under Media Player, CANYON.MID plays properly but when I play other 
  1123. MIDI files, I don't hear any music.
  1124. WIN31 only supports General MIDI.  The MIDI files that you have may be 
  1125. Non-General MIDI. 
  1126.

  1128. 28) I have some questions about RECFILE and PLAYFILE.

  1131. --When PLAYFILE.EXE starts and stops, it produces a "popping" sound.

  1135. --I am having trouble recording 16-bit wave files using the V+xxx 
  1136. parameter.
  1137. Get a newer version of RECFILE.EXE.  Please download P16REC.ZIP from

  1140. --I do not hear any sound when I play back under WIN31's Media Player 
  1141. a file which has been recorded using RECFILE.EXE.

  1145. --I get the error "File is full or blocked" when I run RECFILE.EXE.
  1146. This problem is caused by slow system throughput.  First, reduce to a 
  1147. generic CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.  Second, make sure the hard disk 
  1148. has been optimized (unfragmented).  Third, try at a lower sampling rate 
  1149. or try recording to a ramdrive.
  1150.

  1152. 29) I have problems hearing sounds with certain games.
  1153.     (Games compatibility troubleshooting)
  1154.  
  1155. --The joystick does not work at all or does not work properly when 
  1156. using the PAS-16's joystick port.
  1157. First,  some computers have a built-in joystick port on the motherboard.  
  1158. Other computers have a multi-I/O board that has a joystick port.  Make 
  1159. sure that only one joystick port is enabled and the other one is 
  1160. disabled.  Second, if the computer is to
  1161.  
  1162. --I have games that have already been installed before I installed the 
  1163. PAS-16.  These games are still playing through the internal PC Speaker.
  1164. You need to re-select the sound card or re-install each game.  Please 
  1165. refer to the guides for these games or contact the game manufactures 
  1166. for assistance.
  1167.  
  1168. -Links, The Golf Game, by Access, causes my computer to lock up.
  1169. Links defaults to IRQ 3 and I/O 220.  And the PAS-16 defaults to IRQ5 
  1170. and I/O 220.  Run SETBLAST.EXE  (which  came with Links) to change the 
  1171. defaults used by Links to match whichever settings used by the PAS-16.
  1172.  
  1173. --Wing Commander II, by Origin, causes my computer to lock up or does 
  1174. not produce any digital audio.
  1175. First, make sure you have enabled speech in the WC II's INSTALL.EXE 
  1176. program.  Second, make sure you have expanded memory.  Third, if you 
  1177. use QEMM 6.0,  the "Stealth" option may distort sounds and lock up the 
  1178. computer.  Fourth, check the WC II's  WC2.C
  1179.  
  1180. --Falcon 3.0, by Spectrum Holobyte, does not play any radio voice 
  1181. messages and produces popping sounds.
  1182. Try running the computer in non-TURBO mode or by disabling the 
  1183. internal/external memory cache.  If the problem persists, contact 
  1184. Spectrum Holobyte at (510) 522-1164 to request a software patch.  The 
  1185. current revision is D. 
  1186.  
  1187. --I have some Disney Software games a that have problems with digital 
  1188. audio.
  1189. Contact Disney Software at (818) 567-5340 to request a software patch.  
  1190. Any problems that you experience using this patch should be reported 
  1191. back to Disney Software.
  1192.  
  1193. --I have some Lawrence Productions games that have problems with 
  1194. digital audio.
  1195. Contact Lawrence Productions at (800) 421-4157 to request an updated 
  1196. CT-VOICE.DRV.  Any  problems that you experience using this patch should 
  1197. be reported back to Lawrence Productions.
  1198.  
  1199. --LHX, by Electronic Arts, only plays sounds out of the internal PC 
  1200. Speaker or Ultima V1, by Origin, produces distorted/noisy sound effects 
  1201. and music.
  1202. Please slow down the computer and try again.  This game does not abide 
  1203. by the sound requirements of the FM synthesizer chip, creating a 
  1204. problem when running in fast machines.
  1205.  
  1206. --Robin Hood, The Legend of the Long Bow, by Sierra, produces poor or 
  1207. no digital audio.
  1208. If the PAS-16 is currently set at IRQ7, please select a different IRQ, 
  1209. for example IRQ5, and then try again.
  1210.  
  1211. --Ultima Underworld does not produce any digital audio. Music plays 
  1212. fine.
  1213. After you have finished installing the game and selected the Sound 
  1214. Blaster driver.  Run UWSOUND, which comes with Ultima Underworld, to 
  1215. select the IRQ setting to match with the PAS-16's IRQ setting.
  1216.  
  1217. --I am having trouble running Interplay's Star Trek: The 25th 
  1218. Anniversary.  Can't select the Pro Audio Spectrum from the sound 
  1219. options.
  1220. The Pro Audio Spectrum option is for the PAS.  The PAS uses a 2-operator 
  1221. FM synthesizer chip, and the PAS-16 uses a 4-operator FM synthesizer.  
  1222. The AdLib or SB sound options should work fine.
  1223.  
  1224. --After exiting Windows 3.1 and running Sierra's Mixed-Up Mother Goose, 
  1225. FM sounds are faint.  Cranking up volume helps but exposes background 
  1226. noise.
  1227. The PAS-16's VPASD.386 driver will be updated to resolve this problem.
  1228.  
  1229. --I am having trouble running Microprose's Gunship 2000.
  1230. Microprose has developed new sound drivers which can be downloaded 
  1231. from our BBS.  The file name is GUNSHIP.ZIP which contains different 
  1232. driver files for different IRQ settings. During GS2000's setup routine, 
  1233. select the AdLib driver.
  1234.  
  1235. --I am having trouble running Kings Quest V on CD.  Music plays fine but 
  1236. there is no speech.
  1237. First, try "PAS RESET".  Second, make sure that the SB driver has been 
  1238. selected.  Third, make sure that the CD-ROM drivers have been properly 
  1239. loaded and that the CD-ROM drive is responding since KQ5 needs to access 
  1240. the CD-ROM drive to play speech.
  1241.  
  1242. --I am having trouble running Microprose's F-117.  Sounds play at the 
  1243. wrong speed.
  1244. This game plays FM synthesized audio.  Make sure your Installation Disks 
  1245. have the current version of 1.2.  Add "T:1" to the end of the MVSOUND.SYS 
  1246. statement.  Refer to page 1-25 of the PAS-16 User's Guide v1.1 for an 
  1247. explanation.
  1248.  
  1249. --Wolfenstein 3-D plays digital sounds for the first few seconds of
  1250. play, but messes up afterwards.
  1251. This is one of the games that look for the SET BLASTER...setting in
  1252. your AUTOEXEC.BAT -- If you don't have it in there, use an editor like
  1253. DOS 5's EDIT and add the following statement to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
  1254. SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3
  1255. I5 represents IRQ 5, D1 represents DMA 1, and T3 represents a timing
  1256. variable (in most cases, you can leave T alone)
  1257. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  1258. 30) I have some questions about bus mastering devices.
  1259.     (Bus mastering device troubleshooting)
  1260.  
  1261. --I hear periodic clicking sound or static noise whenever the hard 
  1262. disk's light goes on (while drive is being accessed).
  1263. Lower the bus on-time and increase the bus off-time by the same amount 
  1264. so that the on-time is smaller than the off-time, or experiment to find 
  1265. the best ratio.  For example, with the Adaptec 1542B SCSI Hard Disk 
  1266. Controller, the config.sys lines look like this:
  1267.                 DEVICE=C:\ASPI4DOS.SYS /N11 /F5
  1268.                 DEVICE=C:\ASPIDISK.SYS
  1269. Where N11 is 11/16ms and F5 is 5/16ms (default settings).  The problem 
  1270. is resolved when we changed to N5 and F11.
